Painting Kitchen Cabinets Made Easy: A DIY Guide

Are you ready to give your kitchen cabinets a fresh new look? Don’t worry; painting cabinets can be a fun and affordable project for novice DIY homeowners!

Follow these simple steps and transform your kitchen with new cabinet paint.

Step 1: Clear Space and Remove Hardware

Find a spacious area to work and lay out your cabinets. Remove all drawers and doors, and remove the hardware. This will give you a flat surface to paint and ensure a smooth finish.

Step 2: Prep, Prep, Prep!

Clean your cabinets thoroughly with a gentle grease remover and a damp sponge. Let them dry completely. Next, lightly sand the surfaces with medium-grit sandpaper (around 100-150 grit) to create a good surface for the primer to adhere to. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth and let it dry.

Step 3: Protect Your Surroundings

Cover your countertops and the surrounding work area with drop cloths or protective sheets to prevent paint spills or drips.

Step 4: Prime Time

Apply a high-quality primer to the cabinets. Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start (032) Primer is a great choice. Let the primer dry for at least 24 hours.

Step 5: Smooth it Out

After the primer thoroughly dries, lightly sand the surfaces again with fine sandpaper (around 220 grit) to ensure a smooth finish. Wipe away any dust and let it dry.

Step 6: Paint Away!

Use premium paint like Benjamin Moore’s ADVANCE. Apply the first coat of paint with a nylon/polyester brush or a foam roller for faster coverage. Let the first coat dry completely before applying a second coat.

Step 7: Sand Again

After the first coat is dry, lightly sand the surfaces with 220-grit sandpaper. This will help create an even smoother finish for the final coat.

Step 8: Apply the Final Coat

Apply the second coat of paint for complete coverage and a beautiful finish. Let the cabinets dry for a minimum of 24 hours or even longer for better durability.

Step 9: Let It Dry and Reinstall

Allow the paint to dry for a few days in a well-ventilated area fully. Once everything is dry, you can reattach the hardware and reinstall your newly painted cabinets. Enjoy your refreshed kitchen!
