What You Need to Know When Choosing Interior Doors

When it comes to home renovation, addition, or simply updating the interior of your home, replacing interior doors can be an excellent way to create a beautiful design touch, improve quality and performance, add value to your home, and improve security and privacy. However, choosing the right interior doors for your needs and style can be a bit overwhelming. This post will discuss the primary considerations you need to consider when selecting the perfect interior doors for your home.

Picking an Interior Door

Today, there are so many options when choosing a style of door. One important consideration is the type of door you want, depending on where it will go in your home. When you come in, our team will typically ask if you want a single door, most common for bedrooms and private rooms or double doors, which can also include bifold doors. From there, you can also add sidelites, or small windows, either on top or on the sides. Each layout officers a different style and feel to your space.

The next consideration is the material the door is made from. You generally have two options: wood or MDF. Wood doors are an excellent solution as they can be very simple or complex in design, they can be stained or painted to your specific needs and styles, and they have exceptional durability and provide excellent sound dampening between rooms. On the other hand, MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is another ideal solution for homeowners. They tend to be lighter than wooden doors and can be painted any color you like. Their surfaces are manufactured to be smooth or may have stamped textures to resemble wood grain.

The second consideration is choosing between a hollow or solid core door. Hollow core doors are typically less expensive than their solid core counterparts and are lighter. Building contractors often choose hollow core because they are easier to work with and less costly. However, solid core doors are not hollow and therefore heavier and feel more substantial. They offer superior sound insulation and when you close a solid core door, you typically know it as it just sounds hearty.

The third consideration is whether your new doors will be pre-hung or slab. A pre-hung door means that the door comes pre-attached to a door frame inserted into a cut space on the wall. A slab door is typically just the door. Not all entries have a pre-hung option, so discuss it with your salesperson.

When choosing interior doors, the second to last consideration is getting a door with or without premade cutouts for hinges and door handles. Getting a door without these cutouts means those cuts will need to be made when you install the door.

And finally, the last consideration for your decision-making is the hardware you will use. You will certainly need to finish your style with the perfect door hardware when you get your new doors. We offer a fantastic variety of door hardware by brands like Baldwin, Schlage, and Kwikset to meet nearly every budget. These brands feature various types of finishes, from traditional brass to brushed nickel and more. These details will be integral in punctuating your overall design choices.
