Employee Spotlight with Madison’s Jim Estes

At Cardinal Home Center, we’ve always believed that our greatest asset is the team behind the counter. We pride ourselves on being a local, family-owned business where customers can always count on expert advice from people who live and work in the very same communities they serve. This month, we are thrilled to turn the spotlight on Jim Estes, one of our Sales Associates at the Madison store.

Jim joined the Cardinal family in December 2025, and he has hit the ground running. For Jim, taking on this role wasn’t just about starting a new job—it was about finding a place where his unique background could directly benefit his neighbors.

From Construction Sites to the Sales Counter

Jim is a lifelong Madison County resident, deeply rooted in the area alongside his wife, Susan, and their three children, Grace, Eli, and Samuel. Before bringing his talents to our Madison location, Jim spent 27 years carving out a successful career in the chemical industry, followed by eight years working directly in residential construction.

It’s that hands-on construction experience that has made Jim such a natural fit at the sales counter. Transitioning from the job site to building supply sales allows him to look at quotes and material orders through the eyes of the person actually doing the work.

“This experience helps me understand what the customers need,” Jim explains. “Nearly all the contractors know what they need, but sometimes they do ask what I think. I probably give the most help to DIYers.”

The Daily Balancing Act

A typical day for a sales associate at Cardinal is fast-paced and ever-changing, and Jim handles the chaos with a smile. On any given afternoon, you can find him balancing a mountain of counter sales, building detailed material quotes, organizing incoming orders, and managing deliveries. He has also jumped headfirst into our specialized systems, mastering detailed takeoffs, organizing custom window and door orders, and putting together complex Marvin quotes.

For Jim, the goal on every window project is simple: “Just trying to get them what they want in a quality window.”

While learning the advanced ins and outs of our Spruce software and navigating specialized order applications can be a challenge during the first few months on the job, Jim points to the team culture in Madison as the ultimate support system.

“Knowledge, plain and simple—many employees have used what they sell,” Jim notes when asked what has stood out to him the most so far. “People just help each other, and I hear no complaints. Dedication is evident everywhere.”

Dedicated to the Madison Community

Though Jim is modest about his expertise, his customer-first philosophy shines through the moment he steps up to the counter. “I don’t know as much as a lot of folks,” he says, “but I do know that the customers are why we’re here, and I am dedicated to them.”

While he enjoys working with our area’s busy professional contractors, Jim admits that some of his most rewarding days are the ones spent helping weekend warriors and locals navigate their home improvement projects. “Honestly, I enjoy helping the folks who need a little extra help. Those days are the most rewarding.”

Life Outside the Store

When the store closes, Jim stays just as busy. He loves spending his free time gardening, fishing, and lending a helping hand to his kids. Above all else, he’s happiest when his family is all together, simply enjoying the company of his wife.

Of course, life in Virginia wouldn’t be complete without a little friendly sports rivalry. While Jim attended the University of Virginia, he has a confession that might surprise a few of his regular customers: he actually roots for Virginia Tech. “Well, as long as they aren’t playing the Cavs “Jim says with a laugh!
