Beat the Heat This Summer
Warning Signs of Heat Illness
As supervisors and co-workers, it is critical to keep an eye on each other and look out for potential warning signs. According to OSHA, there are a few warning signs that you should be looking out for. If an employee experiences headaches, nausea, weakness, or heavy sweating, move them to a cooler area and do not leave them alone. Ensure they have plenty of water and remove unnecessary clothing like heavy boots, vests, and hard hats. You should also look out for elevated body temperatures and signs of thirst.
Heat illness can go beyond these signs as well. If you see someone experiencing abnormal thinking or behavior, slurred speech, seizures, or a loss of consciousness, call 911 immediately. Cool the employee immediately with water or ice, and stay with them until help arrives.
What Can You Do?
Check the weather for the next few weeks ahead, and see how much time you will spend outdoors. One of the essential practices to keep in mind is to build a tolerance to heat. Generally, no more than 20% of the first day’s shift should be at full intensity in the heat. From there, you can build tolerance each day by being outside 20% more each day.
Having water throughout the day is essential. Pace yourself and have at least one cup of water every 20 minutes – this will cool you down and give you a break every now and then! Plan some breaks away from the heat, and find shade or a cool area to rest.
Dress for heat as well! Wear a hat, either a ball cap or a wide-brim hat, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing if possible. Also, as a note, if you work in conditions that require face coverings, heat exposure can be even more crucial. Ensure you verbally check with co-workers, as it might be a little harder to see how they are doing throughout the day.
