Employee Spotlight: Anthony Burke, Manager of Information Systems

If you’ve visited a Cardinal Home Center over the last two decades, you’ve likely seen the impact of Anthony Burke’s work. You just might not have realized it. As our Manager of Information Systems, Anthony is the architect behind the digital infrastructure that keeps our six locations running 24/7.

With over 20 years at Cardinal, Anthony’s journey is a masterclass in growth. He went from a “green” floor associate to the leader of our technological frontier. We sat down with him to discuss his evolution, the rise of AI, and his secret life as an “introvert at heart.”

From the Paint Floor to the Server Room

Anthony joined the Cardinal team in 2003. Fresh out of high school and starting college for IT, he was looking for a flexible job. What he found was a career.

“I was green as they got,” Anthony recalls. “While it wasn’t planned to be a long-term solution, I found the challenges of retail in the building industry fascinating. Within six months, I was a supervisor. I fell in love with the work.”

Anthony spent years on the sales floor and eventually became a Store Manager. This “boots-on-the-ground” experience is what sets him apart in his current IT role. He doesn’t just manage hardware. He understands exactly how a slow checkout or a pricing error affects a customer in the aisle.

The “Internal” Customer Service

Today, Anthony’s day-to-day work focuses on the “bridge” between technology and people. He has less direct interaction with the public now. Instead, he views the Cardinal staff as his customers.

  • Security First: Keeping our systems in compliance and secure is his top priority.
  • Streamlining Operations: Managing everything from our ERP systems to the network cabling running behind the scenes.
  • Invisible Impact: Most people think of IT at the checkout. Anthony manages the background systems for account management, supply chain, and data protection that ensure a seamless experience.

Navigating a Changing Landscape

In 20 years, Anthony has witnessed the industry move from pen-and-paper to mobile technology and instant search engines. Now, he’s looking toward the next horizon: Artificial Intelligence.

“Consumer demand is strong for AI to shift the retail industry,” Anthony notes. “But it is critical that we embrace it as a tool of resourcefulness and not sacrifice our own organic creative development. It should never replace critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”

Get to Know Anthony

  • The Extraverted Introvert: While his role requires constant communication, Anthony admits he is an introvert at heart who recharges through quiet time.
  • On the Course: When he’s not troubleshooting a network, you can find him playing disc golf or hitting the traditional golf links.
  • The “Happy Place”: Anthony is happiest on a beach, under an umbrella with good music, or riding the waves at high tide.
  • The Greatest Skill: Despite his tech-heavy role, he credits communication and people skills as the biggest drivers of his success over his 23-year career.

A Legacy of Growth

Looking back, Anthony is most proud of being part of the team that expanded Cardinal from a single-store operation into the multi-location regional leader it is today.

“A lot of hard work and dedication was contributed by many to make it happen,” he says. “It gives me great appreciation to have been a part of that success.”
