Hanging Pictures: A Level Approach
Hanging pictures is a simple DIY project that can add a personal touch to any room. The key to a professional look is to make sure your photographs hang straight and level.
Measuring and Marking
Single Picture
Find the sweet spot: Aim for the center of the picture to be at eye level (usually around 57 inches high). This is the standard height used in galleries and museums.
Measure the width of your wall and mark the center point. This is where the center of your picture should go.
Nail placement: Now measure the distance from the center of the picture to the point where the nail will catch the hanging wire or sawtooth hanger. Mark this spot on the wall.
You can also use painter’s tape to map out your wall design before making any holes. Before hammering, use painter’s tape to outline your picture placement. This gives you a visual without committing to holes. There are even apps that can help you visualize your wall design.
Multiple Pictures
Side by Side: Measure the width of each picture and the desired spacing between them. Mark the center points on the wall.
Three Frames in a Row: Measure the combined width of the three frames and the desired spacing. Mark the center point of the group.
2/3 rule: If you’re hanging more than one picture on a wall, aim for the 2/3 rule. Your collection of artwork should be 2/3 the size of the object you’re hanging it near (whether that’s a couch, credenza, or another type of cabinet)
Choosing the Right Hanger
Wire or Sawtooth Hangers: These are standard options for lightweight to medium-weight frames. They are typically attached to the back of the frame and can be hung from nails or hooks.
D-Rings or Keyhole Hangers: These are often used for heavier frames and provide more flexibility in hanging direction.
Selecting Wall Fasteners
Nails: Suitable for lightweight frames and plaster walls.
Nails with Hooks: Provide a convenient way to hang pictures.
Screws with Plastic Inserts: Ideal for drywall, as they provide a secure anchor.
Drywall Anchors (Toggle Bolts): Used for heavier frames, these expand within the drywall for a secure hold.

Consider the picture’s weight: Choose appropriate hangers and fasteners based on the weight. A heavy picture or heavy mirror will require a big nail, a stud finder or wall-plug anchors, screws that fit them, and a screwdriver.
Use a level: Ensure the picture hangs straight.
Stud Finder: Locate studs in your walls for support, especially for large or heavy pictures.
For mirrors: Use metal bars or brackets designed to provide additional support.
