October is Fire Safety Month
Often, we take for granted that our smoke detectors are working and will do the job if ever needed. It’s essential to make sure your devices are maintained and updated to provide the best opportunities for safety.
Every home needs MULTIPLE smoke detectors that will sound an alarm. Today’s technologies offer devices that can connect to your smartphone, Alexa, google assistant, or even your security alarms. Some smoke detectors include a safety light that illuminates when the alarm goes off. Other units offer two-in-one technology that combines a smoke and carbon monoxide detector in one. So how do you know which one to choose?
Start with an alarm listed with a testing laboratory, meaning it has met specific standards for protection. The certification logo typically appears on the box. Purchase a unit with strobe lights if someone in the house is hard of hearing. If you are replacing older units, having detectors that are the same make and model makes changing batteries easier.
If your smoke detectors are hard-wired, you will still need to replace batteries every six months as a backup and to avoid the low battery chirp. And if you are luckier than most, this won’t happen at 3 am.
• Test units monthly.
• Install batteries immediately when the low-battery warning alarm sounds. Every six months is recommended.
• Clean smoke alarms often with a vacuum and brush attachment.
• Replace smoke alarms every ten years to achieve optimum performance.
• Today’s smoke alarms are more advanced to respond to many fire conditions and are better at deciphering false alarms.
• Mount smoke alarms on the ceiling. Smoke rises.

- Fire safety month commemorates the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. More than 250 lives were lost, and over 17,000 buildings were destroyed.
- This year’s theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” which focuses on the different sounds that alarms and carbon monoxide detectors make and alarm devices for people who are hard of hearing.
- Winter months are the peak time for fire-related deaths, and cooking and heating are the leading causes of home fires and injuries.
