Closet Organization
Have guests coming over for the holidays? Show them your closet! An organized closet will boost holiday spirits when family and friends visit and start opening the wrong doors. :) Here are a few tips and tricks.
Start with a good cleaning. Toss any items in need of repair and give any items gently used to a local charity. A rule of thumb… if you haven’t worn or used it in a year, you are probably not going to.
Start with a sketch. Take the time to think about it. Sit down in the closet and determine where you need to free up space and where you can add space. A great example, if you have hanging space, consider hanging denim rather than placing it in drawers or shelves.
Add shelving. Most closets have one or two shelves and leave a lot of wasted space. Look up. Can you add shelves above the door entrance to gain space? What about a half shelf between another that allows room for taller items on one? Same with hanging rods. If you’ve got extra room under clothes, mount a second clothing rod, and you’ll automatically double your space.
Storage bins and baskets can be a saving grace. Think about reducing clutter. Bulky blankets that are seasonal could get vacuumed zip and then put in a basket to keep it clean and out of sight until needed. Or try using a shoe organizer for bulky items like sweaters. Roll sweaters before stowing them away.
Get everything off the floor. Shoes should have a space to rest, even if it’s a lower shelf installed near the bottom. It keeps things organized and is easier to clean.
Use wall space for additional items. Here’s a tip, hang a shower rod on an interior wall and hang boots or bags with boot hooks.
Utilize corners. Built-in corner shelves allow room for extra storage.
Consider lighting. Having adequate lighting is always a plus. Consider adding an outlet. LED strip lighting can light up a small space.
