September Home Improvement Projects
Fall weekends are a great time to enjoy outdoor time and outdoor home projects done with the cooling temperatures. If you need some help on where to start, our team at Cardinal Home Center has a few suggestions!
Winterize Outdoor Furniture
If you have a lot of patio furniture outside, you will want to ensure that it is prepped for the colder months. Metal furniture is more susceptible to rust – wash aluminum and then apply automotive wax for extra protection. For plastic furniture, rinse off with a hose and towel off. Fabrics need to be vacuumed and shaken off.
You may need: automotive wax, garden hose, cordless vacuum
Seal Driveway
Add curb appeal to your driveway and seal your driveway to prevent further cracking and chipping. Start by prepping your driveway with a pressure washer or garden hose and scrub any stains. Repair cracks and potholes with asphalt crack filler. Then, use a wooden paddle to mix the sealant and start at the highest point of the driveway, smoothing with a squeegee. Wait 24 hours before driving or 4 hours before walking.
You may need: pressure washer, asphalt filler, squeegee
Inspect Your Roof and Siding
Take a walk around your home to see if anything on the exterior needs repairs or replacement. Clear off any debris from the roof’s surface, and make sure the gutters are cleaned out. Make sure no shingles are missing from your roof and replace flashing if needed. A local carpenter or contractor can also inspect your roof for any problems and recommend fixes.
You may need: garden gloves, roof flashing, shingles
Check for Peeling Paint
Check your siding, outdoor trim, deck, and other outdoor structures to see if the paint has peeled after exposure to the sun, especially after this year’s hot temperatures. If you spot any, remove any loose paint with 80-grit to 100-grit sandpaper, patch it with patching material, and smooth the surface with 220-grit sandpaper. You can also use a quart of paint to replace it, and our Benjamin Moore team can make sure you paint it over with the exact color.
You may need: sandpaper, paintbrush, Benjamin Moore Paint (available in quarts and gallons)
