One fast way to add character to your bedroom is by creating an accent wall that will draw attention and make your room feel cozier while adding character. There are several options available to make this space yours, but an affordable way is a board and batten wall. Steps
Before starting there are two different designs that you can choose for this wall: some choose to do a border-type option, where they break off their wall into three or four sections and apply a border per section. This option works well if you are looking to do half of your wall. For a full-wall option, a checker-board design may look best.
1) Measure and cut horizontal boards
Determine what size you want for your accent wall: do you want to cover your entire wall, or are you looking for a half-wall feature? Cut your boards in half, so they are narrow.
2) Measure and cut trim boards
Cut all horizontal and vertical trim boards: cut the vertical boards to the same height as you did in Step 1.
3) Glue the horizontal boards
Apply the horizontal trim boards to the wall using industrial strength glue. Use a level to make sure they are even.
4) Attach the boards to the wall
Confirm there is nothing behind the wall for nails to damage like electricity or water pipes. Use your nail gun to place a nail every ten inches on the top and bottom of the boards. Keep the spacing between the trim boards the same. Repeat the steps with your vertical boards.
5) Caulk the boards
Once boards are attached, caulk the edges. Take your finger afterward and drag it along the edge to seal the joint.
6) Paint your wall
After this, your wall is ready to apply paint! You will probably only need a gallon of paint, but talk to our paint experts about the size of your wall. Tape off the edges and lay down a drop cloth. You will want to apply two coats. In general, a darker color may provide a more eye-catching design. If you aren’t sure what will work best, check out Benjamin Moore’s color options or get some paint chips from any of our stores!
