Holiday Scrap Wood Ideas for Fun Family Craft Time
What can you make with scrap wood blocks, leftover paint, cotton balls, loose buttons, ribbon, bows, markers, glitter, glue, paint brushes, and other random items around your home? The answer is the best holiday decorations EVER!
Bring your family together for fun-filled craft time that will create memories for a lifetime. Gather items from around your home, as mentioned above. Create a workspace on a utility table with a plastic tablecloth or protective tarp. Make some hot cocoa, turn on some festive music and let the fun begin!
We found some of our favorite ideas that can be accomplished with just a few scrap pieces and some wood:
- Create a DIY wood block snowman or Santa to put outside your home! These are super easy to do – cut your wood pieces in a square form, and use paint, cotton balls, or other household supplies!
- Use plywood and a jig saw to cut plywood Christmas trees and customize them with your favorite colors, glitter, and other supplies.
- Want a small tree display without the hassle of a tree? Use cedar or pine to create triangular stands, string rope on the inside of the stands, and hang ornaments.
- Need some new stocking holders? Try cutting and staining small wooden blocks, and screw in coat hooks! Finish it off with something personalized, like initials or holiday-themed cutouts.
- Create farmhouse-style signs with primed pieces of wood, some ribbon, and calligraphy to last for years to come
In most cases, with just a little direction, creative ideas will begin to flow. The age of your children will undoubtedly dictate the complexity of their creations, but this is a fantastic project for children as young as 4 or 5.
You may want to print out some examples of creations to inspire their designs from the internet by searching ‘scrap wood holiday crafts’ or something similar.
Sometimes, doing a ‘dry run’ of the creation without glue helps the vision come to life. After it is assembled and dry, the next step can be painting and accouterments.
This activity is a great way to build creativity, confidence, unforgettable holiday memories, gifts, ornaments, and cheer for years to come.
